Sights and sounds this week in Newburgh

It's hard to believe that September is already half way over. With it comes some of our final summer activities. This month brings the end of the 2017 farmers market season. The market is still open Saturday's through the end of the month -- there's still cooking demo's left and the final market features pumpkin decorating for the kids.

This Saturday will be the final movie in this year's free family movie nights. Thanks to the Heritage Federal Bank sponsorship we have been able to host an outdoor summer screening each month. Saturday will be the final one in the series. Join us at Lou Dennis Community Park (402 Park Drive, Newburgh, IN 47630), music by Gregory Scott starts at 7 p.m. and the featured film "School of Rock" will be shown at 8 p.m. Free popcorn will be given out at the movie courtesy of Abby Grace's Gifts while supplies last. Bring your blankets and chairs to enjoy our final summer movie under the stars.

September also brings with it the redemption window for your United Newburgh Summer Bucks. If you've been collecting your coins through the summer or lucky enough to win one of the giveaway baskets don't forget to get out and spend them. More than $2,000 worth of United Newburgh Bucks will have been distributed to the community by the end of September. More than 20 locally owned Newburgh businesses, shops or restaurants are all participating in the program. Stop in and treat yourself to something and put your coins toward the purchase. A full list of participating locations can be found at www.historicnewburgh.org.

The partnership of United Fidelity Bank with the Historic Newburgh Economic Progress Committee has made this program available. What a fun way to promote our community -- by giving away free money. There's still a chance to win $100 basket of coins too. Stop in the Historic Newburgh Visitors Center before the end of next week and you could win the final giveaway. Also -- pay attention to social media -- you'll still have a chance to win coins there too before the end of the month.

September always comes to an end with the annual Porkapalooza BBQ fundraiser the Newburgh Senior Center hosts. Come out and the see famous "Newburgh BBQ Coalition" in action. Join for lunch -- the sights, sounds and smell can't be topped! Pulled pork sandwich, chips and a drink is just $5 both Friday and Saturday, Sept. 29 -- 30. You can eat in, take out or call to arrange take-out orders of 4+ too! The lunch festivities will happen from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. each day. You can also pre-order ribs and tenderloins -- a full slab of ribs is $25 and smoked tenderloins are $15 each or 2 for $25. Call now and pick yours up on Sept. 30. The Newburgh Senior Center can be reached at 812-853-5627.

Don't forget -- Ghost Walks is right around the corner. Tickets are available online at www.historicnewburgh.org or by calling or stopping in the visitors center at 517 W. Main Street.
