To the editor:
The veterans organizations, along with financial assistance from the Elks and FOP recently renovated the veterans memorial at Maple Grove Cemetery. We have our memorial service at the monument each Memorial Day to honor our departed comrades.
On that weekend, the condition of the cemetery was a disgrace to all of our loved ones and a dishonor to all departed veterans.
We talked to one of the two active trustees and his excuse was that we had had too much rain. That seemed odd since other cemeteries we visited to place a flag on all veterans graves appeared to have been properly maintained.
In the year 2014, we placed a monument with a new pole and flag in Old Boonville Cemetery bearing the names of all our deceased comrades that we know of that are interred at this cemetery. The Boon Township Trustee deserves a commendable thank you for keeping this cemetery maintained.
Upon the death of a veteran, the Warrick County Veterans Memorial Service detail offers a memorial service to his or her family honoring their service to their country.
We do those things because we feel it is our duty and obligation to the community.
Over the summer, the condition of the cemetery has not improved. If anything, it continued to deteriorate, as seen by the feature story and letters to the editor in our local newspaper.
We will continue to give full support to any effort to correct this situation and return the cemetery to the condition it deserves.
