Top sports stories of 2016: Castle pole vaulter places at state finals

Castle senior Alex Shinnerl took the podium at the Indiana State Track and Field finals on a track he would see soon again. Shinnerl took fifth place in the pole vault competition at Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex at Indiana University in Bloomington where he had already signed to participate in track and field for the fall.

“I can’t think of a better place to end my high school career,” he said. “It’s just awesome.”

Shinnerl said his goal for this year was to land himself in the top five of competition at the state finals. He said hard work and a good attitude made it come together. In the end, Shinnerl cleared a height of 15 feet 9 inches after qualifying with a height of 15 feet.

“In past years at state I was so stressed out,” he said. “This time I went out and had fun and that’s how it should be.”
