Patricia “Pat” (Schymik) Whelan

Patricia “Pat” (Schymik) Whelan, 91, of Newburgh, passed away Wednesday,

June 3, 2020 at Newburgh Healthcare. She was born March 27, 1929 in Evansville, IN to the late Frank John and Irene Barbara (Kelso) Schymik.

Pat graduated from Evansville College in 1952 and was a Charter member of Phi Mu Sorority. She was a very active member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church where she established and taught the first PE program at the school and volunteered at the Parish office. She was a Eucharistic minister for over 30 years, coached baseball and active with the Swim Club. Pat became a Certified Activity Director at two local nursing homes and enjoyed volunteering in the community. She was a former member of the Newburgh Women’s Club.

Pat is survived by her husband, James L. Whelan of 67 years; daughters, Susan (Mark) James, Nancy ( Pirtle) Bates, Mary (Marco) Crager and Martha “Muffy” (Jeff) Yando; son, Michael “Moby” Whelan; sister, Francille Burns; grandchildren, Michelle James, Cristie Crump, Tim Bates, Amanda Goedde, Andrew Heilman, Jessica Felker, McKenna Whelan, and Brady Whelan; 16 great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Pat was preceded in death by her brother, Frank Kelso Schymik and great grandson, Jeffrey.

Visitation was held Friday, June 5, 2020 at Ziemer Funeral Home East Chapel, 800 S. Hebron Avenue.

Burial took place at St. John the Baptist Cemetery, Newburgh at a later date.
