Boonville girls basketball closed their season after a sectional championship loss to Memorial.
The Pioneers started the sectional with a first round bye and defeated Mount Vernon in the sectional semifinal, 50-43. Memorial defeated Gibson Southern in the first round, 70-50, and knocked out Heritage Hills in the semifinal, 56-46.
In the semifinal against Mount Vernon, an early lead gave the Pioneers the ground they needed to bring the win. Boonville surged to a 20-7 lead at the end of the first quarter and when Mount Vernon fought back in the second quarter taking four more points than the Pioneers in the quarter, Boonville still held the lead at 31-22 at halftime.
The Pioneers and Wildcats were caught in a defensive battle in the third with neither team breaking ten points ending the third quarter with the Pioneers leading 38-30. Mount Vernon kept pace with Boonville in the fourth, but it wasn’t enough to bridge the gap and the Pioneers had the win, 50-43.
That left Boonville to face Memorial in the sectional hosted at Heritage Hills on Saturday.
The Pioneers worked to battle the Tigers, but Memorial put up an early first quarter lead of 19-12. Boonville battled back in the second, but the Tigers maintained the lead sending the Pioneers into halftime with a 35-27 deficit.
In the end, Boonville couldn’t beat Memorial’s defense and only took 15 points in the entire second half while the Tigers added 23. Memorial took the sectional title and the chance to advance to regional, 58-40.
